***FRINGE REVIEW*** The Strange and the Eerie: Ballads and Stories of Auld Scotland – Cantrip Teasel

By Amy McCombes

This show was performed by Cantrip Teasel, a band of musicians and storytellers including Heather Yule, Jeanie Roy Collins and Alison Bell. They told stories from ancient times and of the travelling people of Scotland, with similar themes such as murder, magic, supernatural beings, and family disputes. Some were told as stories with background harp music to add atmosphere, while others were sang as songs known as ballads.

I thought the singing and music was brilliant and many of the stories were exciting, mysterious, and fairly easy to follow. However, some weren’t as interesting as others and it was a bit disturbing in some parts. I would give four and half stars and would definitely recommend it if it were on again, but be sure to go prepared!

****1/2 4 and a HALF STARS
