DJ FEEL GOOD COLLECTIVE: DJ Dylan

“Until I joined get2gether, I was uncertain I’d ever find my big break but especially now with the Feel Good Collective, I feel I have a great opportunity to do just that!”

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Dylan, I am turning 23 this month and I have been a DJ at get2gether for about 18 months now.

Tell us about the start of your DJ career?

My class at school went to Bendrigg Trust for a camping trip for a week in June 2013 and the last night there we had a disco and one of our instructors was DJing. I had heard that we could help out at night, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I jumped at the opportunity. It was amazing, quite a surreal experience to be honest. For one I ended up doing the whole set. When I was about 2 or 3 songs in, the instructor thought I was doing such a great job, he left me to it!

This gave me a push and after this I became my school’s DJ. I would DJ whenever there was a disco or any other events up until I left school.

And how did you end up at SAM Radio?

When I left school I went to college, 2016-17, which was preparation for employment. Part of that course was work experience which is how I became a DJ at SAM radio. My careers advisor thought that was the perfect placement for me.

The bosses there were so impressed by my performance that I’m still there full time four and a half years on. I really enjoy it, playing music and representing disability on the radio.

What does the Feel Good DJ Campaign and being a DJ mean to you?

When I had my first gig it was surreal, it still feels surreal 8 years on especially considering how far I’ve come. It’s surreal but it’s also so natural for me. I love playing music, I like to have a positive impact on other people when I’m DJing.

The DJ Feel Good Collective, I think it’s a great opportunity and really it’s the kind of opportunity I’ve been waiting for. I think it could be my big break.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

An electronic act that inspires me would probably have to be the prodigy. I like that they’ve got their own unique sound.

What are your hopes for the future?

My hopes are to really be able to get more experience and gigs, opportunities as a DJ and really grow. I see myself on big stages someday.

Catch DJ Dylan at SAM Radio on Tuesday and Fridays 12 – 2pm!
