Making It Happen Together!

We did it again! On Sunday 13th September, get2gether members, staff and supporters took part in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk’s 4.5 mile Wee Wander, raising over £4,200 for get2gether!

This was the third year get2gether has taken part in the Kiltwalk, with 40 people signing up to be part of the team. During the Kiltwalk, we chatted with members about what get2gether meant to them, the friendships they’ve made and why they wanted to help raise money for the get2gether community.

Friendships, old and new!

When we asked members what get2gether means to them, the friendships they have made came up time and again. For some, get2gether has meant meeting people and finding the confidence to try things out of their comfort zone. For others, it’s about having people around them to share the good and hard times with. One member told us how joining get2gether has changed their social life:

“get2gether has helped me come out of my shell and helped me meet new people and I actually have friends now whereas before I didn’t have any friends and I didn’t go out apart from with my family.” - get2gether member

Another member shared how being part of the community has helped them through difficult times:

“I was so isolated before and it’s opened up so many doors for me. I have good and bad days but it’s so much easier to get out of the bad days when I am with other people.”- get2gether member

At get2gether, members choose the events they want to attend and build friendships that are important to them.

Self Determination in Action!

At get2gether, we believe everyone has the right to love and friendship and that meeting new people should be fun and accessible.

Self determination is about having the choice and opportunity to make things happen in your own life. For members, that might mean choosing which events to attend, deciding who they want in their lives or taking on a challenge like the Kiltwalk. As one member shared on the day:

“get2gether gets you upbeat, supporting my friends and enjoying life otherwise I wouldn’t have.” get2gether member- get2gether member

By taking part in the Kiltwalk, members helped raise money for their community. Their efforts will help us continue creating opportunities for adults with disabilities to meet new people, make friends and learn how to navigate relationships. get2gether now has 1,290 members and counting, with 50 members actively involved in our Steering Group, helping shape what we do. Every month, we offer at least 16 inclusive social events, alongside courses about friendship and relationships. Membership is free, and keeping it that way is an important part of making these opportunities accessible for everyone.

The over £4,200 raised by this year’s Kiltwalk team will go directly towards supporting our work and keeping membership free.

“get2gether is good fun, meeting new friends and also reconnecting with old friends otherwise I’d lose touch.”- get2gether member

Thank you for supporting our Kiltwalkers!

A huge thank you to everyone who signed up, took part, donated and supported the team. Raising over £4,200 is a fantastic achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.
