Getting Active Together with Edinburgh Leisure
From trying out classes together to going solo: how get2gether members have made the most of the 6-month Fit & Active pass
Trying new activities and staying active is good for your physical and mental health but it isn’t always easy, especially if you’re not sure where to start. Going with other people can help you feel more confident.
Over the last few months, members of the get2gether community have been attending Edinburgh Leisure classes together, including dance and accessible fitness sessions. These events have been a chance to get moving, meet instructors, and build confidence.
We caught up with get2gether members Sophie, David, and Katrina to hear about their experiences with Edinburgh Leisure’s Fit & Active programme and how it helped them feel motivated and confident to stay active.
Having a go together
Going to a gym or fitness class with others can make trying something new easier. Going with other get2gether members helped Sophie feel more comfortable and try something she wouldn’t have done alone.
“We did a dance class as a get2gether event, and when I went back after I had my pass, I already knew the teacher. She knew me and I knew her. If I hadn’t been to the get2gether event with other members, I would have been too nervous to go.” – Sophie, get2gether member
She also noticed that it made continuing classes on her own much easier:
“Going to the class with the group first made it easier to go back on my own. I love it, I love that it’s free, I love to dance, and I go every week now I have the pass”- Sophie
Katrina agreed that attending together made trying new activities and signing up for free 6-month Edinburgh Leisure pass easier.
“I went to one of the dance classes with get2gether and then filled in the form for the free pass straight away. The whole process was really easy.” – Katrina, get2gether member
Going as a group is not just about trying a new activity. It’s about meeting instructors, making friends, and feeling confident to try classes alone later.

Exploring Classes on Their Own
After signing up for the 6-month free Edinburgh Leisure Fit & Active pass, members have been enjoying going to the gym on their own, building confidence, and staying active. The pass gives adults with disabilities six months of free access to Edinburgh Leisure’s gyms, swimming pools, and fitness classes, with a 70% discount on other activities after that. Members can self-refer or get support from a coordinator or support worker.
Sophie has been attending dance classes every week since getting her pass and says she wouldn’t be going if it wasn’t for the Fit and Active Programme. The pass gave her the confidence to keep going independently. After her first classes, she went shopping with her support worker for gym clothes, which helped her feel prepared and excited for each session.

David has also been making the most of his pass, returning to swimming after nearly ten years at locations including the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Glenogle Swim Centre, Ainslie Park, Dalry, and Warrender. He said:
“I enjoyed having a swimming session all on my own, without needing to book. It made me feel happy just going out and having a swim.” – David, get2gether member
The pass has also helped David stay motivated and build a routine:
“I got on well with the receptionists and spoke to some of the other people in the pool. It helped me develop a routine of going when I not only felt up to it, but planning it around the other things I had going on during a particular week.- David
Katrina added that the flexibility of the Edinburgh Leisure pass makes it easier to stay active:
“I can book classes online or in-person. It’s helpful and makes it easier for me to go to the gym because of the different locations of their gyms. I feel like it will help me be fit and healthy.” – Katrina
These experiences show how the Edinburgh Leisure pass supports people to explore activities independently while still feeling confident and prepared. Sophie, David and Katrina all agree that this pass has allowed them to develop routines, stay active, and enjoy trying new things.
