On the 14th of November, members, partners and our get2gether board gathered online and in person at Thistle Foundation for our 2024 AGM! (Annual General Meeting).

Alasdair McLean, the Chair of get2gether’s board, presented his yearly report, and highlighted that 93% of members said get2gether helps them feel safe, 83% of members developed new skills and confidence through get2gether and 77% said that get2gether helps them make new friends

We look forward to continuing to provide fun, free, accessible events that give our members the opportunity to make friends and develop life-changing skills as we enter 2025!

Our AGM highlights were hearing from our wonderful members who shared with us how get2gether has positively impacted their lives. We want to take this opportunity to share their stories with you.

The first member contribution was from George who opened up about suffering from poor mental health prior to joining get2gether. He talked about getting involved in get2gether events, raising money for get2gether through the KiltWalk and speaking on the radio for the first time. George says “get2gether helped save my life…I have become a more confident person, but most importantly to me I have gained a voice.” To hear more about George’s get2gether journey, listen to his speech below.

Next up, we had Ambassador Philip, talking about his journey from member – sessional staff – Ambassador! He discussed his story of hosting his first event, and how get2gether recognised his passion, friendly-nature and knack for hosting events, which led to him becoming a paid member of staff! Philip shared that “get2gether has given me the motivation to get my life together by giving me a paid job. It’s given me something to look forward to and to show that I can handle responsibilities and people can rely on me and that I can be good at something”.

We then had member Erin share with us the importance of being free to be who you are when making friends and finding new friendships. She talked about being supported by Ambassador Philip to run a film screening of her short film ‘Girl Lost’ to raise awareness about mental health. Erin said that she felt “supported by get2gether” and shared that “in these 10 years I can finally say that after feeling lost and confused about myself, that I love being me with get2gether.”

Next up, we had member Sean talk to us about get2gether giving him the confidence to live his best life. Sean shared the positive impact the Life Your Life course had on his life, he said “this group has increased my confidence to the point where I now feel I belong”. The skills he gained from the Life Your Life course encouraged him to actively participate in Big Nights Out, and even host his own Online Event, a quiz about snacks and cereals.

Finally, we had Peer Mentor Kaz join us to talk about get2gether’s Building Healthy Relationships courses. She shared that her experiences on these courses were invaluable to her personal development and made her feel less alone. Kaz said “I feel as if someone has paid for me to attend a private university” through attending and helping out as a Peer Mentor on our courses.

Thank you to our members for sharing their stories. We are so proud of their vulnerability, honesty and courage. We feel honoured to run events and courses that enrich the lives of adults with disabilities, reducing social isolation and increasing their self-determination and emotional resilience.
