Happy Pride Month!
Happy Pride Month from get2gether.
Here at get2gether, we are celebrating pride in style with our Rainbow Pride ATIK flagship event on Thursday 23rd June at ATIK Edinburgh, from 8pm-12am. Stay up late with us and celebrate the wonderful LGBTQ+ community. We chatted to get2gether members about pride, the LGBTQ+ community and disability pride.
Here’s what they had to say.
What does pride mean to you?
John G: It’s about everybody feeling included and being connected as well. It’s about being yourself and being happy as well, and being the person you want to be.
Erin: Acceptance.
Natalie: Pride to me means not feeling afraid to be visible and to be counted as a human but also learning to be comfortable and unapologetic for who I am. I don’t want to hide who I am or be scared to be me. Love can be shown in so many different ways and that is amazing and should be celebrated.
Katrina: Pride to me means celebrating and being proud of who I am and also being proud of my friends from get2gether and my other friends too.
Robert: Pride to me means a good dance!
What is your favourite thing about the LGBTQ+ community?
John G: Everybody is so friendly. We made the LGBT community because it’s important for people to know they deserve to be loved and sharing the experiences of what the LGBT community is like.
Erin: Feeling me without judgement.
Natalie: My favourite thing about the LGBTQ+ community is not feeling so alone or weird for how I feel and identify. There are other people just like me and there’s a whole community of them! It can be confusing and emotional trying to figure yourself out but there are so many people who have been there in that same place and they can help you find yourself. There’s also a kind of fierceness (in a good way) about the LGBTQ+ community that I love.
Katrina: I think it’s important to be a part of the LGBT community and this year I had the pleasure alongside my friends (Unique-Ability dance crew) of being asked by Miss Annabelle Sings to perform one of our dances, ‘This Is Me’ at Pride for All and it was really good – we’ve been asked to go back next year. Also this year, after 2 years the pride march is happening on Saturday. I can’t wait to go along. I’ll be there with my pride t-shirt and other rainbow colours on.
Robert: My favourite thing about the LGBTQ+ community is to help people within the same community.
What does disability pride mean to you?
John G: It means so much to me. I’m very passionate about people with disabilities. It means feeling included and being proud of what you’ve achieved and most importantly, being proud of yourself. It’s important to be involved in the community, getting involved with lots of different events.
Natalie: Disability pride to me means knowing and showing other people that you don’t need to be fixed. It’s accepting that there will always be things I struggle with but also being proud and celebrating my achievements no matter how small. I have so many strengths that come from my disabilities and I wouldn’t change that.
Katrina: Disability pride is really special to me. It’s great to be able to have something to celebrate and be proud of myself and others with disabilities. I prefer to use the term ‘unique abilities’ because they are a part of me and others and they’ve helped me become the person I’ve become.
Robert: Disability pride to me means having access to pride.
Are you coming to get2gether’s ‘Rainbow pride’ ATIK club night on the 23rd of June?
John G: Sadly not! But looking forward to get2gether’s online pride events.
Erin: Yes, I am!
Natalie: Yes I’ll be at Atik for Rainbow Pride! I will be there in my new role as Ambassador. I am actually really excited about it and looking forward to it, it should be a really good night!! 😁
Katrina: Hell yes I’m coming to ATIK! I’ll be having a table with rainbow glitter and there are going to be other rainbow pride things on the table as well. I’m also looking forward to performing with Unique-Ability and read out my pride poem as well.
Robert: Yes! I’m coming to Rainbow Pride, Thursday night.
We hope you are all having a wonderful pride month and we look forward to celebrating with you on Thursday 23rd June at our Rainbow Pride ATIK night.
