August cover story

Hi Laurence! How long have you been a get2gether member? How did you find out about us?

I joined in February 2016 – I think it had very recently changed from dates n mates. I joined because of friends who were already members and I thought get2gether looked interesting.

What are your favourite activities? What have you enjoyed across the years?

I love the ATIK/HYPE nights! I love anything involving music and the DJs – Wild Night In, themed nights and karaoke nights. I LOVED the Elvis event I hosted with Andrew and Stephan.

I’ve been to loads of different events over the years. I really loved the cinema nights, I’m hoping these start up again. And now it’s summer I’m loving being out and about for events like Picnic in the park.

Have you made friends?

Yes! I like the DJs, Katrina, Kevin D, Josh and Lauren. Some people I see mostly at events but others I meet up with outside get2gether, such as Phillip. I see people at other clubs and then get to know them even more at get2gether events. I love to work the room and chat to lots of different people.

Where did you get the idea for the barge trip?

I’ve done it before, at Christmas most recently and I wanted to do it in nicer weather. We had beautiful weather! I liked the barge trip because I love being the captain.

How did you feel about organising it? Was it exciting, easy, stressful, fun?

I had some help from my staff. I was clear about what I wanted and my staff helped me make decisions. The Seagull Trust are brilliant, they kept me right.

What skills would you say you used when thinking about this event?

Organisation skills and clear communication! I needed to be precise about how many people were coming and wheelchair access.

How did you feel the trip itself went?

Good fun! I loved it. The only problem was buses and accessing the location and making sure everyone was on time, but I thought it was a great day.

Would you like to organise more events in the future? What sort of events?

I’m always very busy and on the go with lots of different projects but I’d love to organise a ping pong night! Watch this space!
