On Monday 4th October, a small group of our members headed to an in person Movie Monday event! Since the start of the Covid19 pandemic, Movie Monday has been confined to an online watching experience, but as restrictions have eased and number of cases dropped, we decided it was finally time to take a step OUT and make a step FORWARD.

We chatted to Ray, the Community Engagement Manager at the Edinburgh Filmhouse about future Movie Monday visits and how our members can get the most out of these trips. This was followed by a screening of The Alpinist, an inspiring film about solo climber with ADHD, Marc-André Leclerc.

Whilst to some, a trip to the cinema may not be anything to write home about, the Covid19 pandemic has taught us just how valuable in person social interactions are. As member David so aptly puts it, just being able to see people is “the most important thing” in life. At the end of the day, there is nothing more important than friendship, love and laughter, and we are so excited to be able to resume our in person events that provide these face-to-face opportunities.

We look forward to seeing some of your lovely faces at our future in person events!

Are you thinking about joining get2gether at our next trip to the Filmhouse in November?

Read on for an exclusive interview with some of our members to find out more!

What did you think about your first Movie Monday in person?

Colin: “I felt really comfortable coming to Movie Monday in person, it was the first time I’ve been to the cinema in a long while since lockdown and it felt really good getting back into the environment.”

Katrina: “I really enjoyed it, it was nice actually being able to see a film, which I hadn’t for a while.”

Keith: “I also really enjoyed it, I wasn’t sure how I’d cope exactly being back in person in that environment and I wasn’t sure I’d even enjoy the film, but I did. I found it really inspirational and I’d really recommend coming along to the next in person Movie Monday in November!

David: “It was great seeing everyone, it makes a point of just how important seeing people and having a social life is to me, having it taken away from me by the pandemic, was so depressing.”

How was your experience getting here?

Colin: “It was easily accessible, it’s right in the centre of town and there are loads of buses you can get, both from Central Edinburgh and from local bus routes.”

Katrina: “There’s a nice café which is really accessible and affordable as well.”

What are your hopes for Movie Monday going forward?

Keith: “I hope people will come and join us for future in person screenings.”

Colin: “It will be great for people to come along to Movie Mondays in person and watch some of the films here, and even if they don’t like the film, come to their café and have a nice meal and read a book.”

Katrina: “We’re going to allow the members to have a choice, so if some members don’t feel comfortable with attending in person events yet, we’re still going to have online Movie Mondays as an option.”

The movie we saw (The Alpinist) was quite inspirational. If you didn’t experience fear, what mountains would you climb?

Keith: “My mountain to climb would be doing things I haven’t had the confidence to do before and try new things.”

Colin: “Mine would be gaining the skills and confidence to drive and pass the theory test.”

Katrina: “In the past people have told me I won’t be able to get a job, but I proved them wrong. In the future, I’d like to get another job and continue to make the most out of my life.”

What was your favourite part of today’s in person Movie Monday?

Keith: “Getting out for the first time and seeing something on the big screen again after nearly two years. It felt like a positive and supportive experience.”

Colin: “Meeting up in person and in a relaxed environment. I was taken aback by how breathtaking the film was, it was so inspirational.”

Katrina: “It was a massive WOW. We met such a lovely person called Ray who gave us a list of films for those who are hard of hearing, like myself. The film was also a big WOW, it was really inspirational and was a great way to kick off our in person Movie Mondays.”

Our trip to the Filmhouse was a FANTASTIC way to kick off our October Pop-Up events – and this is just the beginning! We also have Pop-Ups on the 7th, 15th and 25th of October with our wonderful ambassadors.
